Why It's Never Too Late: The Power of Returning to Ballet | A Conversation with an Adult Dancer

I consider myself very fortunate to teach dance to a wide range of ages, from toddlers who have just learned to walk to adults. It’s incredibly fascinating to see the different reasons why each group chooses to dance, and how they connect with it. One particular group of adult dancers stands out. They are extremely committed to reaching a high level of proficiency, and together, we’ve created a wonderful environment where we all share a deep passion for ballet.




Recently, I spoke to one of my adult students about her journey back to dancing. I was surprised to learn that, although she used to live near the studio, she now lives over an hour away and still makes the effort to attend class twice a week. I was deeply moved and honoured by her dedication, as well as extremely grateful that she enjoyed my classes so much.


Interview with an Adult Dancer: Returning to Ballet


  1. What inspired you to return to dance after time away? Was there a specific moment or event that made you decide to come back?

    "I’ve always wanted to return to ballet but never really found the right time. After lockdown, my friend expressed interest in trying ballet, and I jumped at the opportunity."


  2. Were there any initial hesitations or fears about returning to dance, and how did you overcome them?

    "I was pretty nervous. I wondered if I’d be able to do it, if it would be enjoyable, and if the teacher would be kind. But I decided to commit to the term, no matter what, and just go for it."


  3. What has been your main motivation in returning to the dance studio—are you focusing on improving technique, getting back in shape, or something else?

    "Initially, I didn’t have a specific goal, but right now, my main focus is improving my technique."


  4. How do you fit dance into your routine, especially with other responsibilities like work or family?

    "Usually, I sacrifice some sleep! Luckily, I work from home, and I don’t have many other responsibilities, so I can dedicate time to ballet. My friends all know that I’m unavailable on Mondays and Wednesdays unless it’s school holidays."


  5. How does dancing make you feel, and what motivates you to continue dancing as an adult?

    "Dancing brings me a sense of peace. It allows me to turn off my mind and focus solely on ballet, which helps me relax."


  6. How has your mindset changed since you first started dancing? Are there things you approach differently as an adult dancer now?

    "I don’t think my mindset is drastically different, but I’m now more interested in the artistry of ballet, whereas as a child, I focused purely on technique. As an adult, I appreciate the dance as a whole."


  7. What physical challenges did you face when you first returned to dance? How did your body respond after such a long break?

    "I faced many challenges. I wasn’t used to engaging the ballet muscles, so turning out and keeping my knees straight were particularly difficult. It was also tough to move in sync with the music while coordinating the head and arms."


  8. How has returning to the studio helped you reconnect with the joy of dancing, especially after a break?

    "It’s been wonderful to dance with like-minded people. As an adult, it feels like everyone in class is there because they truly want to be, which creates a welcoming and positive atmosphere."


  9. Has your experience in the studio been different now compared to when you were younger? How has your relationship with dance evolved over time?

    "As an adult, I no longer have to worry about exams, which takes a lot of pressure off. I used to feel stressed about them. Now, I can focus on improving technique and artistry at my own pace, which makes the experience much more enjoyable. I also appreciate the variety between classes."


  10. What’s been the most rewarding part of coming back to dance—has it been mastering a new move, building strength, or something else?

    "The most rewarding part has been the steady progress. Every month, I feel a little stronger and more precise in my movements."


  11. What message would you give to others who might be considering returning to dance after a long break, especially adult dancers who might feel nervous about starting again?

    "Just go for it—it’s so much fun!"


  12. Lastly, what does dance mean to you now compared to when you first began? Has your perspective changed at all?

    "Before, dance was more of a fun hobby, but now it’s a must for me. It challenges me both mentally and physically, and my week doesn’t feel complete without a few classes."
